Black and white head shot of Jem Powell

I believe that people want a life full of joy, challenge and deep connection with their loved ones and larger community. Unfortunately, many of us desire those qualities of life-but have trouble accessing them in the moment. I am here to encourage you to explore your joy, challenge and areas where you struggle to connect to create a path to a life that is full of resonance and enthusiasm.

I strive for a practice that finds the humor in life and helps client ask themselves all the most difficult questions about their inner world and society the world with the support of a trained  teammate. I offer my skills as a doctoral-educated, human being who will be open to discussing oppression, class, race and the queering of gender, sexuality and relationships in our sessions. You can rely on my approach being practical, candid and relatable.

I earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rollins College and a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. I am a course lead at Pepperdine University for Multicultural Counseling and teach graduate level courses on multicultural psychology, group psychotherapy and ethics at multiple institutions.  Additionally, I serve on the board of directors for An Infinite Mind, a non-profit organization the provides support and advocacy for individuals, supporters and therapists coping with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I develop programs and offer outreach in multiple institutions and consult on psychological wellbeing.

I have experience working with people from varied backgrounds and clinical presentations, but specialize in oppression-based trauma, PTSD, neurodivergence and creative-mind management. I additionally enjoy working with parents, provide interpersonal skills support, and offer assertiveness training and groups. In my free time you might find me attempting a gravity-defying stunt dancing Lindy Hop or enjoying chill time with my Jack Russell Terriers!
